Why I built it

I work in the tech industry, so I see data breaches all the time. Handing my brokerage logins to a third-party app was a risk I didn't want to take. I still wanted one clear picture of everything I own, and what that adds up to.

I had been tracking it offline in Excel. It worked, but it was a lot of math, and I had to keep updating prices by hand. So I built what I wanted: a vault of my holdings tied to live pricing, with nothing linked to my accounts.

The other half was the market itself. Keeping up with what I own and what was happening in the market felt like a second job. I didn't want to spend hours searching for news. I wanted the news about my holdings and the things I'm interested in to come to me.

Njord's Compass is a simpler way to manage your assets and net worth, so you never have to guess. Your whole household can sit in one vault under one login.

Why the name

Njord is the Norse god of the sea and the wind. The old stories say he could calm the water, sailors prayed to him for a safe crossing and a good catch, and he is also the god of wealth. A sailor with a good compass could cross unfamiliar water and come home with something to show for it.

The name is a what-if. There is no old story of Njord handing down a compass, but imagine he did, blessed with everything he ruled: the wind, the sea and wealth. It would help you steer through the storm and find your way toward the wealth you are building. That is the idea behind Njord's Compass.

That is how I think about money. Most of us are crossing it without a clear picture: accounts spread across different places, things like cash, gold and a house that no app can see, and market news coming from every direction. A compass does not steer for you. It tells you where you are and which way you are heading, so you can make your own call. That is what I wanted Njord's Compass to be, and it is why it never tells you what to buy or sell.

Two things I use every day

Talk to it. To change my portfolio, I just tell the Oracle with my voice: I sold this, I bought that, add cash here, take cash out there. It works out the changes, I confirm, and it's done. No manual entry.

A daily briefing in my inbox. Every day I get an update on what moved, why it moved, and what's coming up, like earnings calls and big data releases such as the jobs report, plus a look at the week ahead. I don't have to go digging for any of it anymore. I open my email and I already know what's going on with what I own.

Who runs it

Njord's Compass is built and operated by Njords Compass LLC, an Arizona limited liability company. It is a research tool, not a registered investment adviser, and nothing on this site is financial advice.
